Research notes
The 9mm Ultra was developed by the German firms of Lothar Walther and Gustaf Genshow (GECO) in 1936 in order to interest the Luftwaffe in a pistol that was more powerful than the 9mm Kurtz but more compact than the P38 but the idea never went any further. Shown below is a Walther Prototype dating from 1936 and the only know specimen and from the collection of writer Warren Buxton. The idea was revived in 1972 in the Walther PP Super and aimed at the West German Police and renamed the 9mm Police. It is about as powerful as the 9mm Makarov, but not interchangeable, as the Makarov uses a slightly wider diameter bullet. German Law Enforcement selected the more powerful 9mm Parabellum and by the end of the 1970’s the 9mm Police was discontinued. (Erlmeier, Brandt Ref. 140).
