Research notes
This cartridge is one of a series of belted, caliber reduction experiments that were done by the Austrian firm of Georg Roth, for which they filed a patent during March 1891. The purpose of these early belt cases was to "precisely limit the insertion depth of the cartridge into the chamber” for which a belt is attached in front of the extractor groove. These belted experimental also included tests for the development of metal cases, other than brass, although Motz Vol 1 p 158 state that there was “no evidence of the Army Administration's specific involvement in these tests; based on current knowledge, this is a typical initiative of the munitions industry, which, for its part, was independently striving for innovation”.
