Research notes
The 38-70 Winchester was chambered in the Model 1886 Winchester lever-action rifle although first listed in April 1894. It was not a popular cartridge and did not last very long. There were a number of more powerful cartridges introduced for the Model 1886 at roughly the same time, leading to the demise of the 38-70.
