This cartridge was originally developed circa 1882 as a military cartridge by Dombrowski and Heissig but it was never adopted by any country as a service round. The cartridge is similar to the .577 Snider cartridge which was adopted by England as a service cartridge. Cartridges were produced by G Roth and Keller & Co. It never gained popularity and remained in production until WW1. Hochwild means “big game” and the cartridge was probably intended as a deer cartridge. Roth projectiles are flat topped and normally have “HD” (representing Heissig Dombrowski) stamped thereon.
