Norway and Sweden adopted the 12mm rimfire Remington rolling block single-shot rifle as a general-issue service rifle in 1867. Not long afterwards, in 1876 the Norwegian Army became only the second military to adopt a repeating rifle, namely the Krag-Peterson rifle, still in 12mm rimfire. It was only the Swiss Vetterli, adopted in 1867 that preceded the Krag-Peterson rifle. It was a bulky rifle but fared well in troop trials conducted by the military, howeve it was ultimately not adopted, not because it was a bad rifle, but by the early 1880’s the 12mm rimfire catridge was already considerd obsolete. It was during the late 1870’s that an engineer by the name of Jacob Smith Jarmann developed his rifle that ultimately was adopted as the M/1884. It ultimately did not survive that long as it was the era of smokeless propellant and was replaced by the 8mm Krag-Jørgensen less than a decade after adoption.
